REAL Act Attacks Abstinence Education
by Communications
[1.12.2007]

The Responsible Education About Life (REAL) Act, to be introduced to both the House and the Senate later this month, seeks government funding for contraceptive education instead of abstinence education. Contact your Congressional members!

Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) plan to introduce the Responsible Education About Life (REAL) Act to Congress. (H.B. 2553, S. 368)

The purpose of this bill is to gain federal funding in order to teach our children that they cannot withstand their biological urges. While paying lip-service to abstinence, the "comprehensive" sex education programs that would be supported through this act spend the large majority of their time and material pushing contraception. So doing, these programs tacitly encourage teen promiscuity.

And while some groups complain that abstinence education has received over 1 billion dollars in federal money over a ten year period, they hope to gain twice that for their own programs. If the REAL Act is passed, "comprehensive" sex education programs will receive over 1 billion dollars over a five year period.

This is a clear attack on abstinence education. Please contact your Congressional members, and tell them to oppose the Responsible Education About Life (REAL) Act.
