Julie Laipply: Abstinence is a Powerful Choice
by Communications
[2.2.2007]
"Abstinence education must be based in the principle that the body is priceless and you can make the healthiest choice," Julie Laipply told a group of parents, teachers, health professionals and teens.
Promoting the idea that sex is bad won't make a successful abstinence program, explained Laipply, who was Miss Virginia USA in 2002. "To increase the impact of information delivered, engage the body and touch the heart," she said, explaining that learning is facilitated by challenge and inhibited by threat.
In addition to being a professional speaker, the 25-year-old Laipply has been nominated for an Emmy as a television personality for NYC-TV in New York. She left a position at the Pentagon to develop courses and coach executives for four years. Presently, she travels across the country preaching abstinence and a drug-free life.
"Julie is an expert in empowering educators, parents and youth with proven techniques," said Debra Ogden, the school district's coordinator of Health and Physical Education. "She has been contracted by the Florida Department of Health's Abstinence Education Office to do all of their "Great to Wait" trainings across the state."
