Two Catholic in New York dioceses have issued a statement opposing New York City's condom distribution campaign. The city claims to be fighting HIV/AIDS.
His Eminence Cardinal Egan of the Archdiocese of New York and His Excellency Bishop DiMarzio of the Diocese of Brooklyn recently issued a joint statement condemning New York City’s questionable campaign to reduce HIV/AIDS, which is the third-leading cause of death in the city (trailing behind cancer and heart disease). New York officials announced last month their intention to distribute a new New York City brand of condoms, the wrappers of which have a distinct theme corresponding with different subway lines.
According to the New York Post the bishops stated that, "The decision of the City of New York to distribute [26] million free condoms to the public - and minors as well, according to news reports - is tragic and misguided….the taxpayers' money that is being spent to distribute condoms and promote the attitude that 'anything goes' would be far better spent in fostering what is true and what is decent.”
New York officials view insufficient condom use as the main problem in the city’s battle against HIV/AIDS. Said NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden, “Not enough condoms are being used.”
